Biosphere reserve management
Workshop on Biosphere Reserve Management for Biosphere Reserve Managers and Experts was held at the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve (NVBR), Latvia, from 16 to 19 September, 2009. The seminar was organized by the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO LNC) and the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve administration within the UNESCO Participation Programme and with the support of the UNESCO Moscow Office.
42 participants took part in the workshop, uniting the representatives from 9 countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russian Federation and Estonia.
Among the participants of the workshop there were administrators and managers of the biosphere reserves, representatives of the National Commissions for UNESCO, representatives of "Man and Biosphere" National Commissions, Ministries of Environment, Ministries of Nature Protection, ecological organizations, higher educational institutions and others.
The main purpose of the seminar was to discuss the topical issues related to the establishment and management of biosphere reserves, peculiarities of their functioning and the implementation of principles of sustainable development in biosphere reserves. The seminar was aimed at expanding knowledge of the participants on different means of biosphere reserve management learning from the experience in NVBR and other represented biosphere reserves as well as to inform and involve more the participants in the UNESCO programme "Man and Biosphere" (UNESCO MAB) therefore promoting the establishment of new biosphere reserves especially in the countries with no biosphere reserves yet (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova).
